6000 BC
History
Georgia is considered by many to be the birthplace of wine, and its history can be traced back over 8000 years when the people of the South Caucasus discovered that if wild grape juice was buried in a pit over winter, it turned into wine. This led to Georgians cultivating grapes and burying clay vessels, or Qvevris, to create wine – sometimes for as long as 50 years. Archaeologists have found these Qvevris in a huge variety of different shapes, sizes and styles, often characterised by a highly skilled level of craftmanship, highlighting how much winemaking was revered by the ancient Georgians. Qvevris are not just a piece of Georgian wine history, but are still used in today’s Georgian wine production. This process has been given a heritage protection status by UNESCO.
4th century AD
Symbolism of Wine
From the 4th century AD, wine has gained further importance in Georgian culture due to Christianisation of the country. According to tradition, Saint Nino, who preached Christianity in Kartli, bore a cross made from vine wood. Wine has been used in Christian practices ever since, and has become a symbol of sacrifice, and God’s unconditional love towards the mankind.
19th-20th Century
Wine as a Political Weapon
Already in the 19th century, the Georgian society has realised the importance of preserving traditional winemaking methods – both as a historically developed cultural phenomenon and as a factor in the conservation of the Georgian identity within the Russian Empire. Viticulture has became a mean of defence against the Soviet influence.
Today
Viticulture in Georgia today
Georgia ranks 2nd (in terms of volume) in grape production in the former Soviet Union behind Moldova, with Georgian wines have always been the most highly prized and sought after in the Soviet space. Nowadays, Georgian wine is one of the most sought after in Europe, winning multiple awards annually. Georgian market of wine has been vastly expanding within last 10 years, importing to as far as the United States. The international success and recognition of Georgian wine suggest that the current scale of viticulture in Georgia is only the beginning.
History
In Georgia, on Qvevri Trail
According to one of the oldest methods of winemaking, grapes are fermented with their skins intact, in big clay pots known as Qvevri. This traditional technique—not to mention access to 525 varieties of indigenous grapes—makes Georgian wine unlike any other.
